BA Newsletter 1.18

*This year's nominees for the Brit Awards have been announced, and they can be viewed at www.nme.com, www.thetripwire.com and likely a number of blogs as well. As expected, ARCTIC MONKEYS, MUSE, LILLY ALLEN, and ROBBIE WILLIAMS lead this year's nominees.

*You may have noticed that the www.britishaccents.org website is no longer active - it is no more, replaced by the already-operating www.britishaccents.blogspot.com. The former site was too expensive to host and too difficult to maintain, so it's gone the way of
britishaccents.net and paved the way for the more user-friendly blog site.

*Depending on the scheduled, British Accents radio may air this Sunday at 4pm, but could possibly also be back to the 6-7pm slot - depending on whether the students have returned or not. But new music from SEAFOOD, THE HOLLOWAYS, THE KLAXONS, JARVIS COCKER and much more awaits.

*KAISER CHIEFS will guest DJ "Loaded" at Lotus on January 26 to promote their fothcoming album "Yours Truly, Angry Mob", due out on March 27 in the US. Legendary producer STEPHEN STREET tweaked the knobs this time around, and lead single "Ruby" is already being played on some US radio stations and appearing on some blogs.

*THE DECEMBERISTS, still reeling from their defeat in the shredding competition with STEVEN COLBERT, hit the road this spring on an extensive US tour that includes multiple dates in Boston, SF, and the NYC area - check in the show listings for specific dates.

*THE FRATELLIS' excellent debut "Costello Music" gets a US release on March 13 in the US.

*Expect a full-on KOOKS tour this spring for the US, after waiting for months for something beyond a handful of NY & LA showcases.

*THE RAKES will release their sophomore album on March 19 in the UK, titled "Ten New Messages".

*Scottish newcomers FRIGHTENED RABBIT play a handful of US shows concentrated mostly in NYC over the next week. They're at Cake Shop on the 19th, at Sin-e on the 20th with THE BROTHER KITE, and on the 22nd at Mercury Lounge.

*Seattle's THE LONG WINTERS return to Boston March 29 with a show at Great Scott.

*ELECTRELANE have teamed up with THE BLOW for a US tour that comes through Boston on May 16 with a show at the Paradise.

*It seems that the LILY ALLEN Axis date posted here last week isn't happening. It was on the Axis website with ticket info, but apparently the show was pulled before tickets went onsale.

*GORILLAZ are working on a b-sides album to be released later this year. This will be their second such CD, after "G-Sides", which followed the self-titled debut.

*NYC has another celestial-themed club, the Luna Lounge, which is situated at 360 Metropolitan Ave in Brooklyn. Their grand opening party is this Friday, January 19 with THE COMAS.

*On the downside, R&R has already closed and word is that Sin-e will close its doors in April.

*Want to download the new CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH early because you don't feel like waiting to buy the CD? Head to www.insound.com and pre-order the CD. Then you'll be allowed to download the tracks to the album and the disc will be sent to you in time for its release date.

*Hey Chicago - want to share the love this summer? The city is slated to have no less than 4 large-scale music festivals - Lollapalooza, Pitchfork, Intonation, and Wicker Park. How bout sending a bit of that our way, huh?

*V2 Records' US operation is no more - the label has folded. WHITE STRIPES, GANG OF FOUR, MARGOT & THE NUCLEAR SO AND SO's, THE ADORED and a number of others are now without labels but expected to find new homes soon.

*Hard-partying rocker BOBBY GILLESPIE (PRIMAL SCREAM) is championing an unexpected cause - petitioning to prevent a local pub from keeping later hours due to the loud music that emanates from the venue late at night. Apparently Bobby gets cranky after 11pm.

*THE POSTAL SERVICE will reportedly release their long-awaited second album in April of this year.

*FORWARD RUSSIA will release a new single on February 12, a 10" vinyl one-off for a song not named for a number - "Don't Be a Doctor".

*THE CRIBS have signed a US deal with Warner Brothers to release their next album.

*In other label news, MYSTERY JETS have signed to Dim Mak and BRIGHT EYES has reportedly signed with Polydor, in the Universal family.

*WILCO's new album "Blue Sky Blue" will be released on May 15 in the US.
