BA Newsletter 12.14

*This week on British Accents radio - the final show of the year with a recap of some of the year's notable releases, BA favorites, as well as a few new things, including the new IDLEWILD single "If It Takes You Home". Tune in Sunday at 6pm eastern on WMFO 91.5, www.wmfo.org and iTunes radio.

*The British Accents 8th Annual Year-End Poll can be viewed on the BA blog - www.britishaccents.blogspot.com, or on the Myspace site - www.myspace.com/britishaccents. The poll will be emailed out shortly, and results announced in January.

*CAMERA OBSCURA has announced Boston and NYC dates for their January tour - they'll be at Warsaw in Brooklyn on the 24th and Paradise on the 27th.

*NME has unveiled their Top 50 albums of 2006, with ARCTIC MONKEYS topping the list. Surprisingly, THE KOOKS "Inside In/Inside Out" barely makes the list at #50. View those and all the records in between here: http://www.nme.com/news/nme/25389

*A handful of shows for 2007's Noise Pop Festival in SF have been announced. Most peculiar among them is a listing for February 29th, a date that will not exist in 2007. Artists playing on days that do exist include CLINIC, SEBADOH, FRENCH KICKS, AUTOLUX, WILL SHEFF (of OKKERVIL RIVER), TED LEO/PHARMACISTS, GHOSTLAND OBSERVATORY and more. This year's installment, the 15th annual, will run from February 27 - March 4.

*The Grammy Award nominees were announced last week, with the usual heavy dose of musical drivel dominating many categories. A few highlights include: DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE and KEANE for Best Pop Performance, but they'll have to defeat "My Humps" and The Fray to win. DEPECHE MODE, GOLDFRAPP and PET SHOP BOYS get the nod for Best Dance Performance, with GOLDFRAPP, ZERO 7 and PSB also nominated for Dance Album. COLDPLAY and THE RACONTEURS are up for Best Rock Performance. ARCTIC MONKEYS get a surprise nomination for Best Rock Instrumental, up against THE FLAMING LIPS and others. Rock Song nominees include "Chasing Cars" and "When You Were Young". Alternative Album is between ARCTIC MONKEYS, THOM YORKE, FLAMING LIPS, YEAH YEAH YEAHS and GNARLS BARKLEY (who are also nominated for Record of the Year for "Crazy"). A newer category called Urban Alternative features OUTKAST, GNARLS, and PRINCE, among others. GORILLAZ and DEATH CAB are both in for Long For Music Video. And finally, OK GO and THE KILLERS both get nominations for Short Form Music Video. For a full list, head to www.grammy.com

*IGGY & THE STOOGES will release their first album together in 33 years on March 20, titled "The Weirdness". As far as BA knows, all of the tracks on the disc are brand new recordings - nothing old has been resurrected.

*THE RAKES are finishing up their sophomore release with ARCTIC MONKEYS producer JIM ABBISS. The disc is due out in March in the UK and is titled "Ten New Messages". No word on a US release or lead single release yet.

*BRITISH SEA POWER have finished recording their third album, which should be out in the first half of 2007. No album titles or release dates are available at this time.

*ROB DICKINSON has announced a handful of west coast dates, including January 17 at Cafe du Nord in SF and January 20 at Hotel Cafe in LA.

*IDLEWILD embark on a UK tour early next year, and the band's next single from the forthcoming "Make Nother World" album will be released on February 19, titled "No Emotion".

*GOLDFRAPP will "release" a new 4-track live EP in the US on December 19, available only as a download for the time being. The tracks will be available on iTunes, as well as other popular mp3 sites.

*CMJ magazine reports that THE WRENS long out print "Secaucus" album will finally be re-released with some slight tweaks through Wind-Up Records, the successor to the label that shitcanned their career in the mid-90s. There's no mention of the reissues on the Wrens website, www.wrens.com, so this could be an unauthorized release. No street date could be found on CMJ or Wind-Up's website.

*Download some THOM YORKE solo remixes on www.theeraser.net - but they're only available until December 18.

*Download a holiday song from THE KNIFE here: http://www.silentshout.co.uk/christmasreindeer/

*After reaching a price of greater than $155,000 on ebay, a very rare and possibly one-of-a-kind acetate VELVET UNDERGROUND record is still up for grabs, after the winning bid was revealed to be a fake.

*June 14-17 has been confirmed as the date for 2007's Bonnaroo Festival in Tennesse, which has attracted everyone from RADIOHEAD to FLAMING LIPS to MY MORNING JACKET in the past.

*Attention parents: a new kids album is on the way, featuring childrens' songs by artists like JARVIS COCKER, STUART MURDOCH (BELLE & SEBASTIAN), BONNIE PRINCE BILLY and more. The album is out on February 23 in the US, and called "Songs for the Young at Heart".

*Canadian outfit THE ORGAN has announced their own demise after 5 years together.

The 8th Annual British Accents Year-End Poll

Here it is, the categories for this year's British Accents Year-End Poll, the 8th annual (since 1999!). Many die-hard music fans make year-end lists to post on blogs, Myspace, or just for personal enjoyment - this is your chance to have your picks included amongst those of other like-minded music fans. And it's fun!

The categories are pretty much the same as last year. Feel free to fill out the survey as extensively or sparsely as you wish - whatever you have time for. The results will be unveiled around New Year's, and British Accents will accept submissions to the poll until at least Christmas this year.

IMPORTANT - don't post your results on this blog. E-mail them to britishaccents@gmail.com or britishaccents@hotmail.com (but not both, please) and they'll be counted into the final tally.

TOP 10 ALBUMS
-any album released in the US or the UK in 2006 is eligible. So technically, you could vote for some of the same albums that you voted for last year. Please rank them as #'s 1-10, as your #1 will be ranked higher than your #10.

TOP 10 SONGS
-to qualify, the song must be from an album released in the US or the UK in 2006, or released as a single in either country in 2006. This means that a song from an older album could be eligible if it was given a single release this year. Like the albums category, your picks will be weighted from 1-10, so please number them.

WORST 5 ALBUMS
-do what you wish with this category. pick 5 albums from acts you hate, or you could pick 5 disappointing albums from artists you otherwise enjoy.

WORST 5 SONGS
-these can be either those grating, annoying songs that you heard on the radio a few times, or simply a weak or disappointing song from an artist you ordinarily love.

BEST COMPILATION (various artists)
-soundtracks, label comps, tribute albums, box sets... any collection that contains various artists

"BEST BEST OF" (single artist)
-best of CD's, live albums, b-sides collections, remix albums, box sets... any collection featuring a single artist that's not a new studio album or a reissue.

BEST REISSUE
-any re-mastered, re-released, or re-packaged CD.

ARTIST OF THE YEAR
-what artist had a career year in 2006?

BEST NEW ARTIST
-who stands out among 2006's newcomers?

PERSONAL FAVORITE ARTIST
-who are your current personal favorites, among bands still active and solo artists still alive? they don't have to have been active in 2006, as long as they're a favorite of yours.

BEST LIVE SHOW
-name up to 3 concerts or festivals that blew you away this year. Shows can be from anywhere, not just in your city.

MUSICAL HIGHTLIGHT OF 2006
-what was the most exciting thing to happen musically in 2006 - pretty much anything you can think of counts.

MUSICAL LOWLIGHT OF 2006
-what was the biggest disappointment for you musically? Could be a death, breakup of a band, closing of a club, a bad record, a disappointing tour...anything negative that happened in the musical realm in 2005.

BEST DVD
-can be the DVD release of a movie or a musical DVD of video clips, live shows, etc.

BEST FILM
-that opened in theaters in 2006

BEST MUSIC PUBLICATION
-any print magazine or newspaper that you go to for music news, reviews, articles, etc.

BEST MUSIC WEBSITE OR BLOG
-where do you go online for news, downloads, reviews, interviews, etc?

BEST RECORD STORE
-do I need to explain this one?

BEST CLUB NIGHT
-any night that ran during some part of 2006 in any city is eligible.

BEST RADIO STATION (broadcast)
-what's your favorite terrestrial radio station that you listen to with a radio?

BEST RADIO STATION (online)
-what's your favorite radio station that you listen to online? Can be a terrestrial station if you listen to the web stream more often.

BEST REASON TO LOOK FORWARD TO 2007
-here's where you get to predict who will break out next year.

BA Newsletter 12.7

*Sometime later this week, the 8th annual British Accents Year-End
Poll will be posted online at www.britishaccents.blogspot.com, and
will eventually be emailed out to mailing list subscribers and Myspace
friends. Here's your chance to voice your opinions on the best and
worst music of 2006.

*CAMERA OBSCURE have announced more US tour dates, including January 27 @
The Paradise in Boston, and January 24 at Warsaw in Brooklyn.

*Members of RAZORLIGHT and COOPER TEMPLE CLAUSE have been tested for
radiation after the bands flew on planes implicated in the recent
poisoning of a Russian spy in London.

*After 10 years as a San Francisco institution, "popscene" is
expanding to NYC. While the SF original will not be affected,
"popscene nyc" will debut this Thursday, December 7 at Club Midway and
continue on the first and third Thursdays of each month. Original
popscene DJ Jeremy is at the helm, spinning the Britpop and indie hits
and hosting live bands (tba) and guest DJ's (also tba).
www.popscene-nyc.com for more info.

*Three of Britpop's best-known bassists, PETER HOOK of NEW ORDER, MANI
of THE STONE ROSES and ANDY ROURKE of THE SMITHS, are coming together
to form a new band called FREEBASS. No idea what the music will sound
like, but the band has written some songs and is seeking a lead singer
and possibly other musicians as well.

*NME reports that ALEX JAMES has suggested the return of BLUR,
possibly even including GRAHAM COXON, may happen in the near future.
The band is believed to have been writing and working on new songs,
but has not recorded anything new since "Think Tank".

*Could this be the most tounge-in-cheek feud in recent memory - THE
DECEMBERISTS vs tv comedian STEPHEN COLBERT. Apparenty Colbert and The
Decemberists have both shot videos of themselves in front of a green
screen and invited fans to finish the video. When Colbert, who had
done something similar on his show before, learned of the Decemberists
plan, he tried to "get back" at the band by asking Colbert viewers to
dub him into the Decemberists video. Pitchfork has a nice piece, full
of links, that you can see here:
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/news/39928/Exclusive_Decemberists_Counterchallenge_Colbert#39928

*Expect a new album from THE CURE sometime around May 2007, as ROBERT
SMITH & company are hard at work on the new disc after Smith overcame
a bout of writer's block, which seems to explain what happened with
2004's "The Cure".

*Want to catch a glimpse of THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE QUEEN? Myspace is
offering fans a chance to see the band's first gig live, all by going
to the band's page and befriending them.
www.myspace.com/thegoodthebadandthequeen - my that's a long one!

*SUPER FURRY ANIMALS are planning to release a new album later this
year on Rough Trade, referred to as "speaker blowing" by GRUFF RHYS to
NME. He also said the band has enough material for 3 new albums.

*MODEST MOUSE (now featuring JOHNNY MARR on guitar) have pushed back
their new album "We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank" to March 20
in the US.

*Despite appearing as the title track in a recent OASIS documentary,
the song "Lord Don't Slow Me Down" is not expected to see a UK single
release, the band told NME.

*Anyone remember NORTHSIDE? The flash in the pan Madchester band is
back, and playing a handful of dates in the UK. Better yet, the band
is trying to organize a US tour for sometime next year. Some of you
guys want to make this happen? (The Pill, popscene - I'm looking your
way). Contact the band through their Myspace page -
http://www.myspace.com/northsidesilentpartners

*Check out BLOC PARTY's new video for "The Prayer" here, courtesy of
BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/zanelowe/blocparty_video.shtml

*SPOON will play a one-off New Year's show at NYC's Webster Hall.

*Newcomers THE VIEW will make their US debut on January 3 at Mercury Lounge.

*UNDERWORLD have a new release out this week, sort of - they've
contributed to the soundtrack to "Breaking and Entering", which debuts
in NY & LA this weekend and in 2007 most everywhere else.

*PETE DOHERTY, who will likely defy odds by seeing the year 2007, has
been issued a fine for drug possession, but the wayward singer did
avoid jail time in the case.

*THE DEARS are coming to Boston on January 16, when they'll play the
Paradise. Unfortunately it's the same night SLOAN are at the Middle
East, so there's a choice to make.

*CLINIC have added a handful of dates to their North American tour -
they'll be at The Independent in SF on March 3 and The Gramercey in NY
on March 9, in addition to the Middle East show on March 10.

*KEANE have begun rescheduling shows from their cancelled fall US
tour. So far only a handful of west coast dates have been announced,
including January 27 at Berkeley Community Theatre.

*The makers of UK zombie cult hit "Shaun of the Dead" have a new movie
out next year called "Hot Fuzz". It's about cops... but not really.

*CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH will release their second album "Some Loud
Thunder" on January 30 in the US, first making it available as a
download.

*The good news - THE ARCADE FIRE are playing live again. The bad news
- all of the current shows are in the UK.

*Last week's British Accents radio playlist can be viewed by clicking here:
