British Accents Newsletter 8.30.06

*THE BLUETONES will be making a rare US jaunt in October, stopping at NYC's Mercury Lounge on the 2nd & 3rd, and out to SF for a show at Cafe du Nord on October 9. The band also has a self-titled new record on the way, with the lead UK single out on September 18.

*KEANE have rescheduled their show at the Pavillion in Boston for September 24. It's believed that RAZORLIGHT will remain as the opening act.

*Razorlight have, however, cancelled their handful of one-off shows in NY, SF, and LA. Pitchfork says the band will return to the states in December for a headlining tour of their own.

*The good news - BLOC PARTY are coming back for another round of touring. The bad news - they're doing it with the crap-tastic emo-pop band Panic At The Disco. Fortunately, BP play first, so you get the hell outta Dodge after their set. Unfortunately, you'll shell out big bucks to be in the back of a hockey rink with a bunch of pre-pubescent Panic fans. They'll be in Lowell MA on November 18 at at the Madison Square Garden Theater in NY on November 13 & 14.

*CARL BARAT and PETE DOHERTY have both contributed to a recording of "Janie Jones", for a Clash-themed project called STRUMMERVILLE, but the two did not record their parts together and they're not expected to do any further collaborations for the time being.

*Irish rockers LA ROCCA will play a show at the cozy O'Brien's in Allston on September 29 as part of the NEMO festival, a music showcase event similar to CMJ and South By Southwest, but on a smaller scale. www.nemoboston.com for more details.

*THE KOOKS will be at Bowery Ballroom on October 23. They're believed to be hanging around for CMJ the following week, but there's no mention of it from CMJ.

*While THE STREETS were busy covering ARCTIC MONKEYS onstage at Reading, the Monkeys were busy covering newcomers THE LITTLE FLAMES and their song "Put Your Dukes Up, John", for the b-side to their new UK single.

*MANIC STREET PREACHERS are working on the follow-up to 2004's "Lifeblood", and NICKY WIRE tells NME the album sounds more like "Generation Terrorists" and "Everything Must Go" than the band's more recent work. Wire's solo album "I Killed The Zeitgeist" is out on September 25 in the UK.

*THE SHINS will release their third album in January of 2007, to be titled "Wincing the Night Away".

*If you need something to do in Boston on Saturday night, "Love During Wartime" is a one-off event at the Paradise featuring nearly a dozen DJs, including Terence from The Pill, Bethany from The Plan, Ian from Happy Endings, and many more spinning various styles of music for your dancing pleasure. www.myspace.com/loveduringwartime for more info.

*Check out a free show at the Middle East upstairs on Friday night (9/1) with THE STERNS, THE DECEMBER SOUND, THE COLD WAR and more. To make sure you get in, go to www.yarisworks.com and head to the "Boston" section.

*THE LEMONHEADS are back, with a US tour starting out west and hitting The Independent in SF on November 24 & 25, Irving Plaza in NY on December 15, and wrapping up in Boston on the 16th at the Avalon. The band also has a new self-titled album due out on September 26.

*THE STILLS will play 2 shows at the Bowery Ballroom on December 1 & 2.

*DINOSAUR JR's gear was stolen in New York on Tuesday night, and the band would appreciate any help people could give in locating the missing gear. www.jmascis.com for more information.

*Last Sunday's British Accents radio playlist can be viewed here:
http://www.spinitron.com/public/index.php?station=wmfo&month=Aug&year=2006&plid=3130

*You can download the entire show on your iPod or iTunes (ala a podcast) by going to www.wmfo.org and clicking on British Accents "last show" on the schedule page.

BA Newsletter 8/24

*SF's popscene turns 10 this Thursday with a very special live guest - THE KILLERS. Yeah, that band that usually plays very large venues is going to squeeze itself into the tiny by comparison 330 Ritch. For details on acquiring tickets to this event, head to www.popscene-sf.com

*MODEST MOUSE, complete with their new lineup featuring JOHNNY MARR, will release their next album on December 19th in the US, titled "We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank". Last album was about floating, this one's about sinking.

*Legendary 1960's Britpoppers THE ZOMBIES will make their first Boston appearance in many years on September 18 at the Axis, along with MOONEY SUZUKI, THE FLESHTONES and more. It's presented by Little Steven's Underground Garage radio show.

*BADLY DRAWN BOY will do a short US tour in October to push his upcoming "Born in the UK" album. He'll be at the Paradise in Boston on 10/10, Hiro Ballroom in NY on 10/11 and 10/12, and SF's Great American Music Hall on 10/16.

*MOJAVE 3 have announced 2 NYC shows on October 20 & 21 at Bowery Ballroom. These shows will sell out quickly, as Bowery shows are prone to doing.

*INTERPOL have signed with Capitol Records, who will release the band's third album and relieve Matador of their biggest selling artist. Expect the new disc sometime in 2007.

*THE CHARLATANS, not satisfied with the "Melting Pot" collection from a few years ago, have announced plans to release another best-of CD, this one titled "Forever - The Singles". So far there's only a UK release for the record, but the band's US label could opt to pick it up for American release.

*KEANE have cancelled the eastern leg of their upcoming US tour due to lead singer TONY CHAPLIN going into rehab for problems with drugs and alcohol. The band is saying the shows are postponements due for a re-scheduling later this year or early next. Maybe if we're lucky we'll get a few more RAZORLIGHT one-off shows out of this.

*THE KAISER CHIEFS are hard at work on their second album, with lead singer RICKY WILSON recovered from his pedestrian run-in with a moving car a few months back. The band promises the album will be free of "wooah"s, which occured frequently in such songs as "I Predict a Riot" and "Oh My God".

*THE SHINS will play Sub Pop's CMJ showcase on November 2 at the Bowery Ballroom along with THE ELECTED, CSS, OXFORD COLLAPSE, and others. Expect a line 3 blocks long for this one.

*For those Boston KILLERS fans out there, the band will return to the hub on October 26 with a show at the Orpheum.

*DEPECHE MODE will release another best of CD this fall entitled "Best Of" (how very creative). Right there's only a UK release date for it - November 13. There's also a new song on the collection called "Martyr", which will be released as a UK single.

*You can download the entire show on your iPod or iTunes (ala a podcast) by going to www.wmfo.org and clicking on British Accents "last show" on the schedule page.

We scared The Clientele away

Way to go skipping the last Clientele show a few months back at the Middle East downstairs. The show was poorly attended and now the band is skipping Boston and New England entirely for their current US tour.

Introducing: The British Accents Blog

The British Accents Blog is here. In case you missed it, the newsletter has recently been having email server problems, most likely rooted in the emails mistakenly being identified as spam, which disabled the britishaccents@gmail.com email account's ability to send out the weekly newsletter.

I, in turn, created an alternate email address (britishaccentsradio@gmail.com) and sent out an email soliciting suggestions as to how to fix this problem. Enough of you wanted a blog that I went ahead and created this one.

For those who still want to receive the weekly emails in your inbox, I'm working on a solution to that problem as we speak.
