BA Newsletter 11.29

*After more than 25 years together (over 30 if you count JOY DIVISION and WARSAW), NEW ORDER may be finally calling it quits. The Tripwire reports that PETER HOOK says the band is probably done, but STEPHEN MORRIS says no, and BERNARD SUMNER isn't saying anything. The band is also in a quarrel with director ANTON CORBIJN, who is working on the new Ian Curtis/Joy Division bio-pic "Control", over, well, control of the project.

*Want to hear IDLEWILD's new song? Head to the British Accents myspace site - www.myspace.com/britishaccents and wait for the song to start playing. The band's new album "Make Another World" is due out in the UK in February, and the new single "If It Takes You Home" will be sold as a limited edition 7" on December 4 and later as a download.

*THE EDITORS are hard at work on their second album, but to tie over die-hard fans, the band has made an EP of 4 remixes available on iTunes - there you can download remixes of "Munich", "All Sparks", "Camera" and "Blood". The band's new LP is due out next year.

*CAMERA OBSCURA have announced a show on January 26 at Pearl Street in Northampton, so hopefully Boston and New York shows will be announced soon. Head to www.bradleysalmanac.com to download the band's set at Great Scott last summer.

*While ASH prepare to release their new album, former guitarist CHARLOTTE HATHERLEY will release her second solo album on March 5 in the UK, titled "The Deep Blue". A limited edition EP featuring the new single "Behave" will hit shelves on December 17.

*THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE QUEEN will release their second UK single, "Kingdom of Doom", on January 15 in the UK.

*BIS are re-uniting for a handful of UK shows, but unfortunately for American fans, the reunion is expected to be short lived - too short-lived to produce any new material or a US tour.

*THE SHINS will play a handful of west coast dates this December, including the 8th at Bill Graham Arena in SF.

*ARCTIC MONKEYS lead singer ALEX TURNER apparently has enough free time on his hands to start another band, called THE RASCALS. So far they don't have much out, but you can check out a demo on their myspace site - www.myspace.com/rascalmusic

*KULA SHAKER are so far gone from the public conciousness that I heard a DJ last week call them "Koala Shakur", but that's not stopping the band from returning to the studio to work on some new material. Sorry to disappoint all of you JEEVAS fans out there.

*CLINIC have rescheduled some of their cancelled dates from this fall, but in typical Clinic fashion, the dates are a long way away - mark your calendars for March 10 in Boston.

*Newcomers LITTLE MAN TATE will release their UK debut on January 29, titled "About What You Know". The album is expected to get a US release, since the band has already toured here.

*OF MONTREAL have announced an ambitious tour for next year that includes 3 SF dates, 2 stops at Irving Plaza in NY, and one at Boston's cavernous Avalon on March 11. The band's new album "Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?" is out on January 23.

*Anyone remember the mid-90s post-WONDER STUFF project called WE KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE? The band released 2 singles before splitting in 1996, but recorded more than 2 full albums' worth of material in the process. Earlier this year former band member MARTIN GILKS died following a road accident, and now those unreleased recordings will be seeing the light of day as a way to raise money. The unofficial Wonder Stuff fansite, www.room512.com will be releasing the songs through the site.

*2007's edition of the Coachella Festival will be a 3-day affair, running from April 27-29. No bands have been announced yet, so start up the rumour mill. Let's see how well this rumour spreads - I heard MORRISSEY is going to be there. Run with it, people!

*Want to go to that FREE show on December 4 at the Paradise with VON BONDIES? You just need to get yourself on the list, which you can do by emailing contests@thefader.com and giving them your name.

*THE SILVER JEWS have cancelled their year-end shows in New York and Northampton.

*If you're not going out tonight, or if you have Tivo or DV-R, you can check out SILVERSUN PICKUPS on David Letterman this Friday night.

*Coming soon - the 8th annual British Accents years-end poll - so start thinking about your favorite songs, albums, and shows of 2006!

BA Newsletter 11.16

*Planning to suffer through an evening with Panic At The Disco fans for your chance to see BLOC PARTY? Well head to Craigslist or Ebay with those tickets, because Bloc Party ain't gonna be there. Drummer MATT TONG collapsed during a set in Atlanta and the band has postponed all dates until he's well.

*SNOW PATROL have announced a US tour for March 2007, which starts on the west coast and includes dates in SF on March 1, NY on March 26, and and March 28 in Boston. SILVERSUN PICKUPS will open all dates.

*On November 21 at 7pm local time in theatres across the US, the new OASIS documentary "Lord Don't Slow Me Down" will run with special screenings. In the Boston area it's at Kendall Square (oasisrsvp.boston@gmail.com), in New York it's at Sunshine Cinema (oasisrsvp.nyc@gmail.com), and in SF it's at Embarcadero (oasisrsvp.sanfran@gmail.com). Send an email to the appropriate address for your city to be placed on the list.

*THE FALL, who aborted their recent NYC gig after 6 or so songs, have a new album due out in 2007 called "Reformation", as well as a pair of books - one an autobiography by Mark E. Smith and the other a collection of short stories inspired by Fall songs.

*PAUL WELLER is releasing a 4-disc career retrospective titled "Hit Parade" in January. To promote the collection he'll play 3 dates at Irving Plaza in NY - January 29 will focus on THE JAM, January 30 on THE STYLE COUNCIL, and the 31st will be career-spanning.

*Filter Magazine have teamed up with Urban Outfitters to release a charity compilation called "Give. Listen. Help.", which will be available at UO locations and online at www.urbanoutfitters.com. Unlike the chain's clothing the CD won't be offered at 3 times its value, but rather $9.99, with more than 90% of the proceeds going to charity. The tracklisting is impressive - included are the UK single version of FRANZ FERDINAND's "Eleanor Put Your Boots On", THOM YORKE b-side "Harrowdown Hill", KAISER CHIEFS b-side "Sink That Ship", YEAH YEAH YEAHS "Cheated Hearts" - the Peaches mix, plus tracks from THE WALKMEN, SNOWDEN, THE RAPTURE, FEIST and more.

*The Tripwire is reporting that THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE QUEEN will release their self-titled debut in the US, but the date they gave was January 22 - a Monday and the UK release date, so I'm not sure if that piece of info is accurate or not.

*NME reports that a recent JARVIS COCKER solo gig turned into a PULP reunion of sorts, as former bandmates RICHARD HAWLEY, CANDIDA DOYLE, and STEVE MACKAY joined Cocker onstage at various times to perform tracks from the "Jarvis" album. No Pulp songs were played, though he did finish with a cover of "Space Oddity".

*DAMIEN RICE is back on the road, playing a show at Hiro Ballroom tonight (Thursday November 16). Other dates in the brief tour include December 6 at Paramount Theatre in Oakland and December 11 at Orpheum in Boston.

*THE VIEW, whose singles "Superstar Tradesman" and "Wasted Little DJ's" have gotten early play on British Accents, will release their debut on January 22 in the UK. The album is titled "Hats Off to the Buskers", and features the band's first two singles in addition to the January-released "Same Jeans" single.

*Hot newcomers THE FRATELLIS will release two limited edition live recordings via www.concertlive.co.uk - both discs will be limited to 1,000 pressings, so act now if you want them.

*According to a Myspace bulletin British Accents received this week, THE UPPER ROOM have split. But upon further inspection, it appears as if two of the members have left the band, including the one who controls the band's Myspace profile. So the band may continue under the current name with a new lineup - stay tuned.

*Also found on Myspace this week - Madchester one-hit-wonders NORTHSIDE have reformed and are looking to play a handful of US shows. They've already done a few UK dates.

*BERUIT have cancelled all upcoming dates due to illness, hopefully rescheduling in the new year.

*ROBERT POLLARD's shows in Boston and Northampton have been cancelled due to a leg injury.

*Last week's British Accents radio playlist can be viewed by clicking here:

BA Newsletter 11.8

*There was no radio show last week, but British Accents returns this Sunday from 6-7pm with new music from THE VIEW, THE FRATELLIS and more. To check out the playlist for the last BA show 2 weeks ago, the playlist is posted on the BA blog - www.britishaccents.blogspot.com

*ALEX JAMES told the NME that he hopes GRAHAM COXON will re-join the band at some point, revealing that he's on good terms with the now solo former guitarist who is set to release a new solo disc.

*Former BOO RADLEYS and BRAVE CAPTAIN leader MARTIN CARR is in the states for a handful of Northeast shows in November. Catch him November 10 at "The Pill" at Great Scott, November 11 at 2pm for a free instore at Soundfix in Brooklyn with SCRITTI POLITTI and later that evening at Union Hall with SAY HI TO YOUR MOM, AD FRANK and CORIN ASHLEY. He'll also play at the "Death Disco" night at the Annex in Manhattan on November 15.

*THE HORRORS lead singer FARIS BADWAN was attacked onstage at a NYC gig on Halloween. The two wrestled to the floor before security ejected the attacker and the band finished their set. The band also bailed on a scheduled Boston show on Saturday, saying they were tired and didn't feel like making the trip.

*THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE QUEEN, DAMON ALBARN's latest project, release their UK debut on January 22.

*Yearning for new SNOW PATROL material? Download an aol sessions recording on iTunes, available now. GARY LIGHTBODY is also singing on a track called "Some Surprise" for a charity compilation called "The Cake Sale", which is available first in Ireland on November 3, and also features tracks from DIVINE COMEDY, THE THRILLS, GEMMA HAYES and more.

*ROB DICKINSON, formerly of THE CATHERINE WHEEL, has recorded a live album titled "Live and Alone", which will be released at a date to be revealed later. The disc is heavy on CW classics like "Black Metallic", "Heal", and "Eat My Dust...".

*LA ROCCA are the latest of many bands to have a full van's worth of gear ripped off in Philadelphia. Something has me thinking that it's the same people who keep doing it - possibly connected to organized crime through a club. For a list of La Rocca's stolen gear, head to the BA blog - www.britishaccents.blogspot.com

*THE CURE will release a 30-track live DVD shot by fans on December 5. A handful of lucky fans were allowed to film the band's 2005 tour stops, and the best of that footage will be included.

*In other Cure-related news, former keyboardist ROGER O'DONNELL is playing a show at TT the Bear's on November 27. He'll be at Joe's Pub in NY on November 29, Cafe du Nord in SF on December 6, and he's starting off the tour in SF for a free show at the Apple Store on November 11.

*THE SHINS' new single "Phantom Limb" can be streamed now at www.pitchforkmedia.com, and you can buy it off iTunes starting November 14. The CD single is out on November 21, with a 7" single out in December.

*Apparently THE STREETS' MIKE SKINNER attempted to run the NYC marathon last weekend. He didn't make it very far, according to Brooklyn Vegan.

*Want to own original artwork by GRAHAM COXON or JOHN SQUIRE? Check out www.rca.ac.uk to purchase postcard-sized pieces by a series of anonymous artists. Who exactly created which piece will be revealed when the sale is complete, so you'll have to guess which one was created by a 90's Britpop star as opposed to Christo, who also submitted a piece.

*Canadian power poppers SLOAN release their next album "Never Hear The End Of It" on January 9 in the US.

*THE BRAVERY are planning to release a new album next year, and they're doing a handful of "secret" shows, including November 13 @ TT the Bear's, November 14 @ Century Lounge in Providence, and November 29 at Webster Hall in NYC.

*RAINER MARIA are splitting up, but not before a farewell show at Bowery Ballroom on December 16.

La Rocca's gear stolen in Philly

This is something like the 10th band in the past few months to have all of their gear stolen in Philly. Sounds like the work of organized crime to me, possibly working with someone in the club or local music scene there. Recently a trailer full of instruments likely belonging to a jam or roots-rock band appeared on Craigslist Philly for sale.

Re-posted from TheTripwire.com...

Just as their accomplished U.S. tour with the likes of Birdmonster and Phoenix was wrapping up, Dublin rockers La Rocca hit a major snag as their entire van, filled with their gear, was stolen in Philadelphia today.

If you have any information about the missing van or gear, please feel free to contact the band via their MySpace Page.

Here's all the gear, along with a description of the van:
