BA Newsletter 9.28

*After all the drama of the past 2 weeks, British Accents Radio is back on the air, after the WMFO staff shuffled a few things around and made some room for the show. The bad news is that BA is now only 1 hour long, but my "New England Product" show is only an hour and that's packed with tons of great music. BA will now be heard from 6-7pm on Sunday nights on WMFO. This Sunday - a brand new track from BADLY DRAWN BOY.

*OASIS will release an EP featuring some of their legendary b-sides called "Stop The Clocks EP" on November 13 in the UK. The EP will feature "Acquiesce" and "The Masterplan" plus demo versions of "Cigarettes and Alcohol" and "Some Might Say".

*Keeping the 11-year war going, DAMON ALBARN's new band THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE QUEEN will release their debut single 2 weeks prior, on October 30. "Herculean" will be the world's first taste of Albarn's latest project.

*Another Britpop legend keeping in the news - JARVIS COCKER, who will release his solo debut "Jarvis" on November 13.

*Catch ASH playing an intimate show at The Annex in New York on October 5th. The band will debut new material from their forthcoming album, and probably play a bunch of old favorites as well.

*DEPECHE MODE is re-releasing 3 classic albums with extra tracks and other bonus material. "A Broken Frame", "Some Great Reward", and "Songs of Faith and Devotion" are getting the reissue treatment this time around.

*Just as British Accents Radio was saved from the brink in the past week, there's now hope for internet indie station WOXY.com - the folks at www.lala.com have kicked in some of the necessary funds to keep the station on the air. After checking out lala.com, it seems they've got a pretty cool idea - it's a CD trading website that gives some of the proceeds to the artists.

*THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS are working on their next album, the follow-up to "Twin Cinema". In the meantime, Guitarist Todd has a side project called FANCEY that prances into Boston this Friday, September 29, for a show at Bill's Bar sponsored by FNX (and booked by your humble narrator). Also on the bill are excellent local bands THE STERNS, TAXPAYER, GENE DANTE, and FACES ON FILM. All of this for only $5. Starts at 8pm, with DJ Dave's iPod running between the bands.

*MY VITRIOL are back - or at least back on the road anyway. They'll make their long-awaited Boston debut on November 13 at the Middle East upstairs.

*Brit newcomers THE KLAXONS will release their "Xan Valleys EP" in the US on a date tba. The band is also playing a handful of US shows, including SF's "popscene".

*Ready ART BRUT? The band will release a new single on November 6, their first post-"Bang Bang" release. "Nag Nag Nag" will be available as an import only.

*Several members of THE BETA BAND have re-appeared as THE ALIENS, who released an EP in May and have a full length on the way early next year.

*Will they or won't they? Conflicting reports from the EMBRACE camp about the future of the band, after lead singer DANNY MCNAMARA said the band's next album would be their last. Apparently they won't be soundtracking the 2010 English world cup team.

*We hardly missed thee - BABYBIRD is back with his first album in 5 years, titled "Between My Ears There's Nothing But Music".

*Check out the playlist for last Sunday's British Accents radio show here, and a reminder that this week's show is the first week of the 1-hour broadcasts, from 6-7pm

A Stay of Execution

Update on the status of British Accents Radio:

After some scrambling around on the part of the WMFO management, they've managed to secure a 1-hour slot for BA for the fall of 2006. For most of the fall, the show will run from 6-7pm on Sunday evenings. Granted it's only an hour of Britpop, but at least it's a weekly fill.

And because the 7pm DJ won't be there this week, tune in from 6-8pm for a special "classic" 2-hour edition of British Accents. Listen via iTunes radio, www.wmfo.org webstream, and 91.5 FM in the Boston area.

Thanks to everyone for the voices of support, and to the WMFO staff for doing their part to keep my lil radio show on the air.

British Accents Radio - off the air?

WMFO's fall schedule has been posted, and British Accents is not currently on it. According to station management the problem is an oversight combined with high demand for Sunday time slots. While the extra time to pursue my FNX goals sounds nice, it remains that British Accents is something that I enjoy putting my time into, and it appears as if there's still enough demand out there for a Britpop-oriented radio show.

I had initially given out some e-mail addresses where people could let their voices be heard, but apparently WMFO has heard from too many of those voices, and have assured me that they're working to find a solution to the problem. Thanks to everyone who let their voice be heard, but for now, save that praise for telling your friends about this blog.

BA Newsletter 9.13

*Another one bites the dust - after releasing arguably their best record, ARAB STRAP have called it quits. The band will do a farewell tour, though it's not known whether it will just be in the UK or whether it will extend overseas. A career-spanning compilation CD (which would be called a Greatest Hits if Arab Strap had hits) will also come out in 2007.

*Headed to the 2006 CMJ Music Marathon in NYC on Halloween weekend? Check out www.cmj.com for a growing lineup of bands playing this year's festival. As I get information from the clubs it will be added to the NYC show listings. Some of the notable names include THE SHINS, THE KNIFE, BEN LEE, HOT CHIP,

*KEANE have now cancelled their US tour indefinitely, as the frozen mudslide addiction has proven to require more than a week of rehab. RAZORLIGHT have subsequently cancelled all of their US dates, both with and without Keane.

*The Boston-area readers of this newsletter probably don't need my advice here, but for everyone else, I give you the BON SAVANTS, who release their long-awaited debut CD to this glowing review from industry site The Tripwire, and for the uninitiated, you can download their perfect indie-pop nugget "Between The Moon & The Ocean". http://www.thetripwire.com/reviews/2006/9/13/bon-savants-i-post-rock-defends-the-nation-i-unsigned

*For everyone who tunes in to "New England Product" Sunday nights on WFNX (DJ Dave's Boston-centric new music show), stick around an extra hour for a special edition of "First Contact", FNX's non-local new music show, as you'll hear new tracks from BA favorites like THE KOOKS and THE CHANGES. Tune in on 101.7 in Boston, 92.1 in NH, and www.fnxradio.com everywhere else.

*CHARLOTTE HATHERLEY, former ASH hearthrob (to me anyway) who left the band to pursue her budding solo career, is hard at work on the follow-up to "Grey Will Fade" and the record is expected sometime in early 2007.

*THE ORDINARY BOYS will release their third UK-only album on October 23, titled "How To Get Everything You Ever Wanted In Ten Easy Steps". The band are hoping that the long album title confuses a few uninformed ARCTIC MONKEYS buyers, apparently. It's criminal that this is the band's third album and they have no US deal. C'mon, I know there's label folks on this mailing list - somebody hurry up and sign these blokes!

*THE ARCTIC MONKEYS aren't going to pocket their 20,000 quid from winning the Mercury Prize, as they've all stated they'll give the award to an undisclosed charity. The proceeds from the million records they've sold, however, they've decided will be kept.

*NME had an amusing little piece about how IDLEWILD singer RODDY WOOMBLE was a bit confused when OUTKAST's new album first hit the streets: "Not sure what's up with this new OutKast album. (I) keep seeing posters for it and thinking I've forgotten about a concert." No word on whether Roddy will name the new Idlewild record "Outkast".

*A long time debate amongst many on this mailing list will continue once more - what are OASIS' best songs? The band thinks it's Rock N Roll Star, Some Might Say, Talk Tonight, Lyla, The Importance of Being Idle, Wonderwall, Slide Away, Cigarettes & Alcohol, The Masterplan, Live Forever, Acquiesce, Supersonic, Half the World Away, Go Let It Out, Songbird, Morning Glory, Champagne Supernova, and Don't Look Back in Anger. That's the tracklisting for the forthcoming "Stop The Clocks". Nice to see 4 b-sides on there, but no Whatever? She's Electric? The Hindu Times? Stand By Me? D'You Know What I Mean? "Be Here Now" is represented by zero songs, yet they made room for Songbird. Sometimes I don't know about this band...

*Although it came out in late August, I've included RUBICKS "In Miniature" in this week's new releases because it flew in under the radar. BA has waited 4 years for this record, after happening across their amazing debut single "Midas". Britpop club DJ's and ST ETIENNE fans, have at it!

*It's a long way away, but start saving your cash for January 23, 2007 - it's the slated new release date for new albums by CLINIC, THE SHINS, and OF MONTREAL.

*Next Thursday, September 22, check out a FREE special event at ZuZu featuring your humble narrator DJ Dave, spinning along with Greggy Most (of THE CHAINLETTER/"Rock Candy" DJ night) and an acoustic set from THE DAILY PRAVDA. Here's your chance to pick up a copy of the Pravda's extremely limited pressing debut EP, and dance to an evening of indie rock, 80s, britpop, punk, guilty pleasures and more.

*Thanks to DJ Shawn of WMFO's "Paddy Whacked Radio" for the last-minute fill-in coverage of British Accents last Sunday. If you liked what you heard, check out his show on Fridays from 9-11am eastern time on WMFO. Check out the playlist here: http://spinitron.com/public/index.php?station=wmfo&month=Sep&year=2006&plid=3184

*Let's all welcome LILY ALLEN to the KOOKS bandwagon - head here to download her entry to the now-crowded wagon: http://noyetidance.blogspot.com/2006/08/kooks-helios-lily-allen.html

*Check out Torr's Blog - www.torr.typepad.com - to check out some old Britpop videos from the 1990's (via youtube) as well as (while they last) download links to the newly released PULP rarities.

*You can download the entire show on your iPod or iTunes (ala a
podcast) by going to www.wmfo.org and clicking on British Accents
"last show" on the schedule page.

BA Newsletter 9.6.06

*After several years of relative dark horses taking it, THE ARCTIC MONKEYS have won this year's Mercury Prize. The Monkeys beat out RICHARD HAWLEY, EDITORS, MUSE, THOM YORKE, GUILLEMOTS and several others to take the award, which went to ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS last year. HMV reported that Richard Hawley's album saw the biggest sales spike as a result of the nominations.

*The lineup for this year's Pill Halloween show has been announced - LIFESTYLE will play as NEW ORDER, THE DAILY PRAVDA will take on SUEDE, and THE 8MM FUZZ will do their best ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN. All happening Halloween night at Great Scott.

*Sad news from radio-land - WOXY.com is folding after two years as an internet-only radio station. After trying several different fundraising options, they continued to come up short and have decided to pull the plug, barring the appearance of a generous benefactor. September 15th is expected to the last day for the station.

*OASIS will re-record their beloved b-side "Acquiesce" and release it as a proper UK single ahead of the release of their upcoming collection "Stop the Clocks". No release date has been given for the single yet.

*Promising sophomores HOPE OF THE STATES have split up, shortly after the UK release of their excellent second album "Left", which unfortunately will not be performed in front of any US audiences.

*Could THE KOOKS be the next UK band to make it big in the US? Following the lead of FRANZ FERDINAND, BLOC PARTY and ARCTIC MONKEYS, The Kooks ride into the US on a wave of favorable press and have already sold out 2 NYC shows and 1 LA show that are almost 2 months away.

*Ready Art Brut? ART BRUT have added more US tour dates, many of them with WE ARE SCIENTISTS, including October 2 at Fillmore in SF. They'll also do 2 NYC dates without WAS, October 18 at Warsaw and October 19 at Irving Plaza.

*DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE and TED LEO/PHARMACISTS will get together for a US tour this fall, stopping by Opera House in Boston on November 2, Providence Performing Arts Center on November 4, and Theater at Madison Square Garden on November 8.

*GOMEZ will be touring the US this fall, playing 3 dates in NYC (October 5-7 at Bowery), along with September 10 at the Berkeley Community Theatre and September 22 on Jay Leno. The "Five Me in a Hut" rarities & b-sides collection will be released on October 17 in the US.

*BATTLE will release their debut mini-album called "Back to Earth" on October 23 in the UK, and will include their previous singles "Tendency" and "Isabelle" but not "Demons".

*In this week's episode of "Over before it started", LES INCOMPETANTS have called it a very brief day, shortly after their aptly titled single "How It All Went Wrong" fanned out across the airwaves. Awhile back lead singer BILLY BELL was attacked in Camden and hospitalized, and following that stroke of bad luck, musical differences arose that caused the end of what I thought could have been the next FRANZ FERDINAND.

*On November 6th, MANIC STREET PREACHERS will release a bonus edition of their 1996 classic "Everything Must Go", with more than a full CD's worth of extra tracks ranging from demos to alternate takes to b-sides, and a DVD featuring video clips, live and tv performances and more.

*SOUTH will be at Mercury Lounge in NYC on October 14 & 15.

*In other Mercury Lounge news, FIELDS have sweetened the deal a bit by joining THE BLUETONES first of two shows at the club, on October 2. THE ISLES will support the Bluetones on the 3rd.

*THE MAGIC NUMBERS will give the Manics some comeptition on November 6th - that's when the band release their second album, "Those The Brokes". THE LONG BLONDES also release their debut that day.

*Chicago's THE CHANGES, who played the British Accents 6th Anniversary show at the Middle East, release their debut album on September 26, titled "Today is Tonight".

*Late singer-songwriter MATTHEW JAY's catalog will get a little bigger on September 24, the third anniversary of his death from a fall in London, when an untitled, unreleased track found on his home computer is made available for download. Head to www.matthewjay.com to find the track.

*Attention fans of PAUL WELLER and the Fred Perry line - Weller and the company have joined forces to create a limited edition polo shirt that quickly sold out of the first run, so they're making a few more to satisfy the demand. To sign up, go here: http://www.fredperry.com/paulweller/

*BOX CODAX, the side project of FRANZ FERDINAND guitarist NICK McCARTHY, release their debut "Only an Orchard Away" in the UK this week.

*THE CORAL are recording their 4th album right now at NOEL GALLAGHER's studio in Buckinghamshire.

*TAHITI 80 will make a rare apperance in Boston on November 20 at the Paradise Lounge.

*DINOSAUR JR add their name to the long list of bands who have had their equipment stolen in New York - the band lost a trailer full of gear recently and are hoping that other musicians might identify the missing gear. www.filter-mag.com has a full list of the lost instruments.

*THE RAPTURE will make their return to Boston at the Axis on All Saint's Day (November 1).

*SUFJAN STEVENS loves Jesus. Which is why, for the past 5 years, ol' Sufjan has recorded a handful of songs as a birthday present to his savior. Those songs will be compiled and released as a box set on November 13, just in time for your holiday shopping.

*Last Sunday's British Accents radio playlist can be viewed here:
http://www.spinitron.com/public/index.php?station=wmfo&month=Sep&year=2006&plid=3158

*You can download the entire show on your iPod or iTunes (ala a
podcast) by going to www.wmfo.org and clicking on British Accents
"last show" on the schedule page.
